Goodwill Evening in Stroud promises to be a cultural, family-themed evening of magical mid-winter pageantry. At 6 pm on the Subscription Rooms Forecourt, Keith Allen, well known for his role as the Sheriff of Nottingham in the BBC series "Robin Hood", will join Father Christmas to switch on the Christmas lights, and mark the beginning of the Grand Venetian Procession around Stroud led by Gypsy Queen, the Cotswold Canals Trust horse - everyone welcome.

Stroud's famous independent shops and cafes will throw open their doors as we extend a warm welcome to you during this evening of winter revelry.

Kendrick Street Deli are planning a big surprise for the night - all under wraps at the moment, but we hear it involves going back in time...

JKC Complete Finishing Touch in Kendrick Street will be joining forces with Kendrick Street Deli to run a special fund raising event for The Gloucestershire Chest Fund to help asthma sufferers in memory of their friend and colleague Jasmine who passed away earlier this year. Jasmine loved Stroud Goodwill Evening, so there will be special activities outside the shop in her memory.

K & G Convenience , a new independent family business, will be serving mince pies, selling cards by local artist Rachel Peglar, and raffling a bottle of champagne.

The Made in Stroud Shop will be celebrating their 9th birthday as they opened on Goodwill Evening 2000.

Kendrick Street's latest addition, The Trading Post, will be open for second hand records and CDs and good sound s....

This year the Stroud News & Journal will host "S Factor", a stage for local talent at The Little Vic in Gloucester Street. To enter, fill out the form in the Stroud News and Journal. Auditions will take place at The Little Vic all day on Saturday 28th November, S Factor Final on Goodwill Evening from 5 pm at the Little Vic.

Riff's are putting on a Goodwill Evening Stage to showcase local talent in Threadneedle Street, where market stalls will lead up to Made in Stroud's traditional Christmas market in the Cornhill . Angel Vintage in Union Street will be open for fun, frolics and dressing up. You can hire costumes for the procession here.

Special Christmas markets will run in the Cornhill, Shambles (indoor and outdoor markets) and Sub Rooms Ballroom.

Local charities, organisations, PTAs and pre-schools will have Christmas fund raising stalls around town.

Street entertainers will perform, along with carol singers & choirs, acoustic musicians,jugglers and entertainers.

There will be carousels for young children and candy floss in King Street.

Fawkes Place - 4pm to 9pm Green Goodwill at Fawkes Place

Bicycology Stroud will be participating in Stroud's annual 'Goodwill Evening'. We'll be relying on the goodwill of the public of Stroud (and their strong legs) to pedal-power some musical treats in Fawkes Place (behind the Sub Rooms/High Street). We're collaborating with Bristol's Project Bicyclette and will be bringing you top-drawer local Hip Hop and the finest Stroud MCs - Mr Wits, the Rat Tash Collective and Chalk MC. We'll also have time for you to show us your skills, with an Open Mic slot, and a People's Republic of Disco where you can play us your favourite tune (if you agree to pedal-power it!).

The Traditional Christmas Market at the Cornhill, run by Made in Stroud from 4 pm to 9 pm with Wynstones Class VIII choir singing at 6pm, and Jade the harpist playing at 7 pm, plus beautiful stalls selling locally produced and fairly traded gifts, mulled wine, hot chocolate, organic burgers and more.

Procession - Starting 6 pm on the Sub Rooms forecourt.

A masked Venetian-style lantern-lit procession will meet for the switching on of the Christmas lights at 6.00 pm on the Subscription Rooms Forecourt. The procession will then weave its way around town, led by Father Christmas, who will this year be on foot, accompanied by Cotswold Canals horse, Gypsy Queen. Everyone is welcome to join in the procession, which will include carol singers, the Smartworks dragon, Cotswold Players cast and crew, acoustic medieval musicians and local theatre groups, school groups, and youth groups. Everyone welcome to join in.

Time to get creative, dress up in velvet cloaks made from a pair of old curtains, don your mask, and join the parade. Come along and join in this magical family event, co-ordinated by Stroud community artist Lis Parker. Buy your mask at the farmers market Goodwill stall on Saturday 21st or Saturday 28th November.

Punch and Judy and Jazz Jive Party at The Shambles Market in Stroud, with face painting in St Laurence's Church Hall kitchen area

Alongside regular stallholders at this popular twice-weekly market, there will be special Christmas gift stalls, mulled wine and a Jazz Jive Swing dance party hosted by James and Bridget of Stroud's fabulous Jazz Jive Swing. Free Punch and Judy show for the kiddies. The Stroud News & Journal stall will be at the Shambles market serving mulled wine and taking your competition entries.

Traditional Christmas Market at the Cornhill - 4 pm to 9 pm.

Now in it's 9th year, this popular atmospheric mid-winter gift market includes stallholders from the award-winning farmers' market, local artists and makers, fairly traded gifts from around the globe,the market cafe, the organic burger stall, Selsley Herb & Spice Mulled Wine and more. Lit by twinkling fairy lights and to the sound of choirs singing traditional and international songs, and local musicians playing harp and stringed instruments. Look out for the Stroud mummers who will be wandering in to perform their traditional Cotswold Christmas mummers' play.

Dumb Flicks from InPrint in the High Street

The return of this popular Goodwill staple will be brought to you by the organisers of Stroud Photography Festival and our famous Stroud Poets, in conjunction with InPrint in the High Street. Along with poetry readings and stills of the area, silent black and white movies will entertain from the Cotswold stone walls of the traditional High Street alley ways. Not to be missed.

Goodwill Evening Craft Fair in the Sub Rooms Ballroom - from 5 pm free admission.

There will be an interesting variety of stalls selling high-quality gifts and artwork. Come and join in the festive atmosphere of the town and find that special present for your friends and family. Admission Free

The Magic Bean Company at Smartworks until 9 pm. 

Open to anyone in Stroud with learning disabilities, and to family and friends who’d like to join in.  Magic is about as Smartworks becomes a dragon’s den.  Open for members at 5 pm to get involved in the preparations and make things.  At 5.45 pm the illuminated dragon will leave Smartworks and snake its way towards the centre of town accompanied by participants in masks and carrying lanterns who will join the procession leaving the Sub Rooms Forecourt at 6 pm.  Back at Smartworks after the procession, come and keep warm and have fun.  From 7 pm to 9 pm there will be a Dragon disco with DJ and member Carl Davis.  From 8 pm a Dragons Hot Supper will be served for members and friends including mince pies, hot punch, spicy burgers, sausage rolls.  A Christmas pudding will be lit during the evening to add to the excitement.  Contact David and Liz Wade on 01285 821241

Christmas Tree Festival 2009 - St. Laurence's Church, Stroud (behind the Shambles Market, by Church Street car park)

The fifth week-long St Laurence Church 2009 Christmas Tree Festival will be on-going during the Goodwill evening.

Following the increasingly popular festivals of previous years, we will be filling the Church with over 60 decorated Christmas trees, displayed by organisations, businesses, groups and individuals from across the five valleys and beyond. We are keen to welcome as many visitors as possible to enjoy the spectacle of originally decorated trees. Last year, we even had a coach load of people from Liverpool! During the past years this has attracted many visitors and we anticipate another successful event.

Woodruff's, the UK's original and first totally organic cafe, will be opening for a special Goodwill Evening meal. Open from 8.30 am til late, serving main courses, snacks, hot and cold drinks, cakes.
